Describe your business model (including type of company, products / services)

Since it was founded in 1925, the DEKRA promise has been: We ensure the safety of human interaction with technology and the environment. Since then, the Deutscher Kraftfahrzeug-Überwachungs-Verein e.V. has become one of the world's leading expert organizations. Today, DEKRA is the world’s largest unlisted expert organization in the TIC (testing, inspection, certification) industry. DEKRA SE is a wholly owned subsidiary of DEKRA e.V. and manages the Group’s operating business. DEKRA generated revenues totaling more than €3.5 billion in 2021. The company currently employs almost 48,000 people in over 60 countries on all five continents.

Our skilled experts create increased safety, security, and sustainability across all the key areas of life – on the road, at work and at home. We have a clear and ambitious vision of the future. The vision for our 100th birthday in 2025 is to see DEKRA as the global partner for a safe, secure, and sustainable world. The repeated award of the "Platinum" sustainability rating from EcoVadis in 2022 underscores the successful course of this strategy.

Our international expansion began with the entry into the marketplace in France and Italy in 1988. Since then, the company has further expanded its global position through strategic acquisitions with locations in countries such as Mainland China, the USA, South Africa, and New Zealand. Our broad service portfolio with qualified and independent expert services ranges from vehicle inspection and expert appraisals to claims services, industrial and building inspections, advisory and training services, auditing, testing and certification of products and systems, as well as temporary work. DEKRA is organized in six Regions and seven Service Divisions (see matrix and explanations below). More information about our latest business figures, expansions, developments, and management can be found in our annual and financial reports.

Six Regions:

Our six regions are: Americas, APAC, Central East Europe & Middle East, Germany, North-West Europe and South-West Europe. Numbers on revenues and employees per Region can be found in the following links to each Region. Overall revenue distribution can be found in our annual financial report (p. 50).

Americas:

The Americas region covers South, Central, and North America. As well as product testing, services such as exhaust gas testing and vehicle inspections are key business areas. In recent years, these services have been established or expanded in, for example, the USA, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Costa Rica.

APAC:

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region consists of Asian countries such as Mainland China, Japan, and South Korea, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Alongside vehicle and plant inspections, the business there focuses on product testing for the automotive, energy, and medical technology industries, as well as for the retail sector.

Central East Europe & Middle East:

The portfolio in the Central East Europe & Middle East (CEEME) region not only includes services for corporate customers, for example, in connection with electromagnetic compatibility. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, DEKRA also introduced the Trusted Facility Certificate as a new standard for health and safety at tourist destinations.

Germany:

DEKRA’s home market of Germany is our most important region. This is reflected in the number of employees and revenue there – and also in the fact that Germany is the driving force behind many innovations for the entire Group, including future issues like hydrogen and cyber security. At the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, also home to the DEKRA Technology Center, we operate Europe’s largest independent test track for automated and networked mobility.

North-West Europe:

In the North-West Europe region, DEKRA is expanding its vehicle inspection activities in the Scandinavian countries. In addition, the inspection of plants and power stations as well as digital services associated with the Industrial Internet of Things play an important role. The latter includes remote inspections and online monitoring services. Arnhem in the Netherlands is the central location for the company’s diverse classic and innovative product testing and certification services.

South-West Europe:

In the South-West Europe region, which comprises France, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, vehicle and industrial inspections are among the main DEKRA services. In France, DEKRA’s second home market, the vehicle inspection network is characterized by the company’s own stations and those operated by franchise holders.
At the site in Málaga, Spain, work focuses on the safe connectivity and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of cellphones, smart home products, and Industry 4.0 applications. There is also a test site for networked driving. The services at the site include product testing, the early-stage development of test processes, the testing of V2X (vehicle-to-everything) technologies, and big data applications.

Seven Service Divisions:

The seven Service Divisions are: Vehicle Inspection, Claims & Expertise, Product Testing, Industrial Inspection, Audit, Advisory & Training Services (former two SDs Consulting and Training) and Temporary Work. Revenue distribution can be found in our annual report (p. 50).

Vehicle Inspection:

This Service Division comprises periodic vehicle inspections, non-periodic technical inspections, and periodic emission tests for all kinds of vehicles. With an eye on the future of mobility, DEKRA provides reliable technical inspections of increasingly networked and automated vehicles and electric vehicles in this core area of expertise.

Claims & Expertise:

The services offered by this Service Division include claims settlements for any type of claim, vehicle valuation and administration services, and expertise – both nationally and internationally.

Product Testing:

The testing and certification of consumer, industrial, automotive, IT, communications, and medical products are part of the Product Testing Service Division’s expertise. DEKRA combines security and connectivity tests in order to work toward a future in which products work perfectly and communicate clearly with each other.

Industrial Inspection:

DEKRA combines comprehensive building, facility, machinery, and infrastructure inspection services to industry customers around the world, including a wide range of material tests.

Audit:

Independent evaluations and certification of management systems in accordance with national and international standards are the core expertise of the Audit Service Division. DEKRA holds a range of accreditations for system certifications, and offers first-party (internal audits), second-party (auditing suppliers in accordance with their own standards), and third-party audits (audits in accordance with internationally recognized standards, with corresponding authorization).

Advisory & Training Services (former SDs Consulting and Training):

DEKRA advises its customers on the safety-related, practical transformation of procedures and activities in a dynamic digital age, at the workplace and in operational practice. The experts in the Consulting Service Division follow a holistic, behavior-based approach based on scientific findings relating to the fundamental principles of human behavior.

The Training Service Division offers a broad range of solutions and services in the fields of training, specialist education and placement from abroad, languages, integration, and learning, using modern learning management systems (LMS) and digital technologies. DEKRA has operated as a training partner for industry and government for more than 50 years.

Temporary Work:

Employees in the Temp Work Service Division are characterized by their extensive know-how in the fields of HR, solution, event, and logistics management.

Five Corporate Focus Areas:

The expanding of our organizational vision was paired with strategic priority setting in 2021. We will be concentrating on five focus areas, which represent significant growth fields. For each growth field there is one so called Corporate Focus Area (CFA). These are relevant for all Regions and all Service Divisions and connect those as cross-divisional and -regional functions.

Across the CFAs of Artificial Intelligence & Advanced Analytics, Future Vehicles & Mobility Services, Remote Services, Information & Cyber Security Services, and Sustainability Services, we will both improve our existing offering and develop new services, especially digital ones.

Focus Area Future Vehicles & Mobility Services:

Mobility
is in a period of transformation more fascinating than any that has existed since the invention of the automobile. A paradigm shift is taking place – and it goes far beyond just drive technologies. Road safety is also being redefined. DEKRA is helping to shape this development in key areas of testing and monitoring.

Focus Area Information & Cyber Security Services:

One of the main challenges of digitalization is ensuring the security of data. Information and cyber security are critical factors in the success of companies, in protecting personal rights and in ensuring the safety of machinery and vehicles. With the increasing number of criminal attacks in a networked world, the need for security is growing. As an independent third party, DEKRA is working hard at the interface between technology and regulation to shape the security architecture of the future.

Focus Area Remote Services:

In almost every industry and company, the coronavirus pandemic has intensified the trend toward offering or providing products and services from a distance. “Remote” is the new buzzword. DEKRA has risen to this challenge and has digitalized its offering in all situations where this is permitted by rules and regulations.

Focus Area Artificial Intelligence & Advanced Analytics:

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a vision for the future but already a key driver in economic value creation. Companies are relying on AI as well as processes such as data analytics and machine learning in order to achieve greater automation of their production processes. Or they are using the insights they generate to improve existing services and gain access to new business areas. However, AI applications are not “preprogrammed” to deliver benefits. That is why it is necessary in particular for independent bodies like DEKRA to define and continually review binding rules.

Focus Area Sustainability Services:

The 26th Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, COP26, was undoubtedly one of the most significant events of 2021 – even though the conference in Scotland didn’t live up to all expectations. Nevertheless, the event was an important milestone on the path toward a sustainable economy and way of living – a path that DEKRA also helps to shape with its services. This is because DEKRA helps companies to redefine their business processes with sustainability in mind. Of course, DEKRA is also continuously reducing its own environmental footprint.
